If there was ever a young celeb to suffer in the media, it was Britney. She went through an interesting marriage, an even more interesting divorce and then suffered a full-scale breakdown in the eyes of the world. Even when we didnít want to watch, news of Britneyís latest melt-down reached us until we were sick of hearing about her Ė and then she would do something even crazier.
Now, it would seem, that Britney has managed to put that part of her life behind her. She gave up her fight for full custody of her two young sons in order to pull herself together and with help from her parents, she has sought treatment for the manic-depressive condition that was bringing her low. The manager who allegedly kept her under his thumb is removed from the scene and Britney is on the way to a full recovery Ė not only so she can save herself, but so that she can save her family and gain more time with her boys.
Many can remember how Britney
tried to come back shining a year ago and flopped badly with a lackluster performance. This year, however, she seems to be doing well in the come-back department. Britney was a frequent presence on the MTV Video Music Awards. While sheís not normally known for her eloquence, I for one thought she was a welcome relief from the showís host. But thatís an opinion Iíll keep to myself.
Years ago Britney was someone to watch because she was truly a superstar. She kissed Madonna, she wore a python, she ripped her clothes off onstage. Then she joined the ranks of the odd celebrities who are morbidly curious. She shaved her head, she ran over paparazzi, she locked her self and son inside her home. At the VMAs we saw a new Britney Ė a cool and collected young woman gracious to win her awards and showing not a sign of scandal.
While Iím relieved for Britney that she seems to be off on a new, positive track, Iíll admit I was a bit disappointed by how normal she seemed.
The question many people are asking now is not whether Britney is on her way back from trouble, but how far she will go. Britney from years past was a superstar. Are three VMA awards this year enough to catapult her once fledgling career? There are even questions as to how the awards were determined. Itís not that Britney isnít quite an entertainer, itís just that the awards she won this year were for things frankly less entertaining than anything else sheís ever done Ė and I mean in her music career.
Itís impossible to tell if Britney will be able to make a full come back or if she even wants to. Iím sure she wants her career back, but Iíd be willing to wager sheís just as interested in having her sons back as well, and the two lifestyles arenít always conducive.
