You may love the new fairies you can find online, and perhaps fairies are your favorite magical creature. But unless you like things dark and mysterious, you’d do well to learn a bit more about the true nature of fairies before claiming them as one of your absolute favorite beings.

What is a Fairy?

A fairy is a type of ethereal creature that is part of mythology and legend. Fairies have many names in different cultures including ay, fey, fae, faerie. Together fairies can be called wee folk, good folk, people of peace. Some of these names are a misnomer, or wrong, but we’ll get to that in a second. The fairies we’re most familiar are tiny little females who fly around sprinkling kids with pixie dust – which is especially ironic since only pixies have pixie dust.

But the fairies of cartoons and lunchboxes are not real depictions of fairies. The real fairies on which the legends and tales are based were not good and helpful little creatures. In fact, you would do very well to avoid fairies at all costs – your life might depend on it.

Fairy Lore

The old tales of fairies involve some rather gruesome things. If you anger fairies or just have bad luck, the wee folk will sneak into your home and steal your baby. They will replace him with a changeling which is a creature that appears to be a baby, but is actually a demon or unnatural creature in disguise.

Fairies have also been known to lead travelers astray at night as a prank. But some pranks go too far. Young people suffering from consumption, a type of lung disease, were said to be forced by the fairies to go and dance all night. That exertion and lack of rest was causing the individuals to waste away and eventually die. Animals such as cows that were ridden by fairies would be stricken with disease or become paralyzed.

Protecting Yourself from Fairies

Sure, you may still think that fairies are cute little girls with wings on their back. But if legends from around the globe are to be believed, fairies are not small, they don’t necessarily have wings, and they are most often up to no good. There are things you can do to protect yourself from fairy pranks and malice, however.

Avoid Known Fairy Locations – CS Lewis, author of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe claims there is a home with ghosts and fairies in England. The house is avoided not because of the resident ghost – but because of the fairies. Stay off paths traveled by the fairies and don’t dig in the fairies’ hills. Don’t swim in fairy pools or cut down fairy trees. If you make the fairies mad – you’ll definitely pay the price.

Protect Yourself – Get yourself a lucky charm such as a bell or four leaf clover to help drive the dangerous fairies away. Church bells and running water can help protect you as well. If all else fails, turn your clothes inside out as this can protect you as well. (Although I’m not sure why.)

Live Well – You can offend a fairy by having a dirty home or leaving clothes strewn about. So live well and keep your place clean.

Overpower the Fairy – If you are particularly brave, you can overpower a fairy and force it to do your bidding by learning its name. If you can find out the name of a fairy, you can call it to you and force it to do your bidding. Of course, this is highly insulting to the fairy, so it may not be the best course of action after all.

cool article! flower fairies, the little cute ones which are generally benign, are speeled f-a-i-r-y. other types can be refered to by their proper naems or just the general "faerie". Faerie actualy includes quite a plethora of creatures, cuh as mermaids and trolls and such.

Hm, never heard THAT before. I don't think I believe their evil. And I believe in fairy's and such.

I guess some of them could be bad, but not all of them.

Gosh, fairies sprinkle kids with fairy dust not pixie dust. Geez.

Just kidding. Just like Orii, I think it's fun to look up the truths behind myths and what-have-yous.

But good article.
