The New Year is off to a start, and this is the time to be sure you are prepared to start it off right. Itís no fun to start a fresh and exciting year with old baggage or things left undone. Be sure you are really ready for 2008 Ė now is the time to plan ahead!
One of your primary concerns this year may be money. If youíre old enough to have a job
, do you like the one you have? Should you be out looking for a better one? Unless you are already paying your own bills, a job should be 51% fun and 49% work. If the paycheck isnít doing much to get you excited about pinning on your name tag, consider trying out a new field or maybe just ask your manager for a raise. Money may not be everything, but it can sure make a boring job a bit more tolerable.
There is nothing like the New Year to make you examine your relationships. Take a look at all of your relationships to see if they are all making you a bigger, better person. Do your friends make you happy to be around them? Are you going out with your boyfriend for any reason other than enjoying his company?
Staying with friends to be popular or because they might be mean if you donít hang out with them will just make you miserable. Sticking with a guy because youíre not sure how to break up with him might be weighing you down Ė especially if a better guy is waiting just around the bend. I sincerely hope your best friends are great people and youíre inspired to do great things around them, but if not find new friends. Your life is more precious than being someoneís puppet or trying to fit in with rude people.
Donít forget your family, too. Family can be rough since you canít walk away from them. But if you have some bad blood between you and your sister, try and clear the air. Do something nice for your mom Ė and not just at Christmas. You donít have to change who you are, but try to get along with everyone at least once in a while, it will make life much less stressful.
This is the start of a new semester (or is very close to one) and you should give it your all. Keep trying, even when the homework piles on and youíd rather just take the C. Your hard work now can make a huge difference down the road as you start looking at colleges and careers. Get out of your comfort zone and try new subjects or take a stab at joining a club youíve been thinking about. The New Year is also a perfect time to create a New You Ė complete with a better report card, better attendance and perhaps better behavior in class.
And donít forget the most important person of all Ė you! Is your soul clean and fresh? Take up meditation or gentle exercise like Yoga or Pilates to help relieve stress and clear your mind. Donít leave things undone and be sure youíre the kind of person you want to be. As hard as it can be to remember, you come first in your life, and you need to be happy with who you are. If youíre not happy, try to figure out why and then come up with a real action plan to do something about it. Work with a friend, personal trainer or even a counselor to make 2008 the best year of your life!
