It can be hard to get enough sleep at night. School starts obscenely early and all the best shows and chats are happening after midnight. Whatís a girl supposed to do? Skip out on the action to get a full eight hours of sleep when she can probably get by with only five or six? I know lots of us do it, but we need to stop. Sleep does more than just resting our bodies Ė itís actually pretty important.

Sleep Makes You Smarter

When youíre sleeping your brain is not. During sleep your brain is actually working at itís finest. All the information and learning youíve done during the day gets processed by your brain while you are sleeping. And it doesnít happen right when you fall asleep Ė your brain kicks into overdrive while you are in the deep sleep that happens after a few hours.

Have you ever gone to bed worrying about something or trying to remember a detail, only to have the answer easily almost as soon as you wake up? That is your brain processing and filing things away for you. The better your sleep, the better your brain works.

Your teachers arenít joking when they say to get a good nightís sleep before a test Ė it really can make a huge difference in what you know. Oh, and while weíre on the topic, cramming the night before a test is almost worthless. Your brain has to process what youíve learned and if you donít sleep after studying, you havenít stored any of that knowledge away where you can use it.

Sleep Keeps You Healthy

Not only is your brain processing and getting caught up on the day while you sleep, your body is, too. You can think of nights as the time your body does scheduled maintenance. Sleep helps your body heal, keeps your systems working correctly and lets your immune system build back up after the beating it takes each day.

In fact, not getting enough sleep can actually make you sick. If youíre not sleeping, youíre not helping your body protect you from germs. And most importantly for those under eighteen, your body does a lot of its growing while you sleep. So if youíre not sleeping enough, youíre not letting your body do what it needs to do.

Sleep Makes You Pretty

Not that you need to be any prettier, but being fully rested keeps you looking healthy and fresh. Whatís more attractive than that? Not getting enough sleep can give you dark circles under your eyes and make you look unhealthy overall. Waking well rested in the morning rather than tired and grumpy from a lack of sleep can make worlds of difference in your self confidence and overall state of attractiveness.

Sleep Makes You Sane

There have been studies done that claim people who donít get enough sleep go through the day about the same as a slightly drunk person. The less sleep you get, the more ďdrunkĒ you are. Sure you might get by on only five hours a night, but your friends are going to think youíre nuts.

Driving, thinking, flirting and taking tests are all very dangerous without enough sleep. Your emotions are closer to the surface and you break down more easily when youíre tired.

Things seem overwhelming, and you find yourself freaking out about little issues that shouldnít bother you are all. Itís amazing how much more mellow you are after a good nightís sleep.

Finally, there is a question of what is a good nightís sleep. The popular numbers you hear are seven to eight hours a night with four being the absolute minimum. That number is right Ė for adults. Kids under the age of twelve or so need closer to ten hours of sleep a night, and believe it or not, older kids actually need more. (You can blame puberty and hormones.) You donít get the ďadult sleep statusĒ until you are done growing which is around eighteen or nineteen for girls. No wonder youíre so tired all the time!

it's gonna b tuff getting up at 6:30 since im usually going to bed late and waking up around 9 or 10 last year i did all my homework during home room so i can usually come home and do stuff but idk if my homeroom teacher will make us do extra work or let us work on homework there at school i hate doing homework at home cuz i usually wait untill after dinner and it goes to my bed time and sometimes past then it really ticks me off cuz all my friends are usually on tdp in the evening anyway i also like to read before i go to sleep and i can get really into the book and read until my mom comes in and says to turn the light off then it takes awhile for me to get to sleep after that

I NEEDDD SLEEEPPPPP! x] i need sleep.. but i cant .. thats the thing as had as i try i cant sleep XDD after bein up all night i go too skool...come back.. do homework.. go on tdp... then play sum games.. then its time 4 bed.. ¨¨ so i go upstairs and cant sleep again x] great...

I have to get up at about 6.45 for my 7.30am bus to school and I only get to sleep like 1 in the morning, sometimes 2 and I'm not even watching TV. It's music i stay up to listen to.
