There is nothing like a weekend trip to get you excited about seeing new things and bummed about sitting in the car with siblings for four or five hours at a stretch. Riding in a car on a long trip does give you a chance to enjoy the scenery, but when the flatlands or marsh becomes a bit overwhelming, find other activities to amuse yourself.
If youíre lucky enough to have unlimited texting capabilities, there is no limit to the ways you can enjoy yourself. Chat with friends and flirt with your boyfriend. Of course, working on your phone for hours at a time might put your parents on edge and encourage your little brother to become a thief so he can read what youíve been writing all this time.
Music is fun to listen to, but I like to listen to books on my iPod. Long car trips are the perfect way to do exactly that. If you know the trip is coming ahead of time, download a few books youíve been interested to read and you can listen to them the entire time. Another option is to download a book thatís required for school. Listen while getting to your destination and back and youíll be ready to tackle the book report Sunday night. Listening to a recorded book is also a great activity for those individuals who have a hard time looking down in the car. If you tend to get carsick, any activity that must be done in your lap, such as texting or reading can be troublesome.
Watch a Movie
Portable DVD players and even laptops with DVD drives can let you enjoy a movie during the trip. Try to find something everyone in the backseat can agree on. My personal favorites for long car rides are the sorts of movies that are classics Ė not just new releases. Look for ones that have favorite one-liners and then you can torment each other and laugh hysterically about the lines the rest of the trip. If you watch the movie with headphones, you can also keep parents in the dark and enjoy their annoyed expressions as an added bonus.
Teenagers are always behind on sleep, and a long car ride is a nice time to get caught up. Bring a pillow and blanket. Plug in some soothing music and just close your eyes and relax. Taking a nap in the car isnít the same as real sleep in a bed, but it will still feel good to just completely relax and let time pass. Dozing, sleeping or just resting feels great and lets you ignore any sibling squabbles, annoying songs on the radio or the violent movie your brother is watching. When you get to your destination, youíll also have a bit more energy for whatever sorts of fun and adventures lie ahead.
