Iím tall. At 5 feet 9 inches in height, Iíve always struggled with pants that are too short and shirts that donít hit my waist where they are supposed to. Itís an ongoing struggle for all of the girls over about 5 feet 8 inches in height, but itís not a battle that you can surrender if you hope to look great in your clothes. Unfortunately, over the years my other tall friends and I have made a few fashion blunders. Hopefully my embarrassment will keep you from making the same mistakes.
Pants That Are Too Short Arenít Capris
Pants come in all lengths and rises, but most it seems, come in lengths that are too short for tall girls to wear easily. Sometimes we give in and just buy the too-short pants thinking weíll pass them off as capris Ė as if the three inches of ankle at the bottom were there by design. Unfortunately, the cut of the pants usually gives this plan away.
Most pants arenít cut straight down the leg. They have a flare at the bottom that sticks out Ė especially when that extra fabric is flapping around your ankles. Pants should come to the middle of your heel. If youíre wearing heels, this means your pants will need to be even longer than the ones that barely touch the floor. Those that barely reach the floor look great with flip flops or flats. Those that donít reach the floor barefoot should be put back on the rack. Look for tall lengths at stores or online. Many store have more selection for tall girls available online.
Tailored Shirts Should Be Tailored
When you pick out a tailored shirt to wear Ė one with buttons down the front with a feminine shape, it should not bunch in the back or flare just under your bra strap. Perfectly fitted tailored shirts are hard for any woman to find, and tall girls have the extra challenge of finding a shirt that is long enough, has sleeves the right length and fits correctly around the middle of the body. Donít be afraid to get a shirt tailored to fit around the back and waist if the sleeves and shoulders fit correctly. Or again, try the tall sections of online retailers to find shirts that have a longer waistline and sleeves.
Donít Slouch in Heels!
Tall girls seem to be notorious for apologizing for their height. Stick a tall girl in a pair of heels and she should be praising her height as a blessing and wearing it proudly. Unfortunately, many girls ruin beautiful outfits by slouching in them Ė as if slouching would let them hide behind the others in the room. If you want to wear pretty shoes, wear them. If they make you taller than everyone in the room, thatís great! Height is power, after all.
Slouching not only ruins an outfit, it can make your back hurt and convey all sorts of negative body language. If youíre not entirely comfortable in your height just yet, stick with flats for now and work into heels later when youíve worn your size a while longer. Even if you never wear heels, you absolutely should always stand up straight. Itís simply more attractive.
