The teenage years and the years surrounding the teenager years (on either end) can be pretty rough. Not only is your body growing and changing, your personality and friendships are changing as well. Living life to the fullest during these days is often a matter of what you know about yourself and how well youíre able to handle change Ė because there will be change for all of us. In my view of the world, tainted by my own experience of course, some of the most important things girls should know include:
Your Healthy Body Weight Range
If you think every girl should weigh 115 pounds, you have another think coming. Itís not published enough in my opinion, but the healthy weight ranges of women young and old are pretty wide. Most girls seem to get a number in their head that they Ďshouldí weigh. Most often that number comes from someplace completely random such as a fashion magazine or even pulled out of thin air. Finding your individual healthy weight range
is something you should sit down and talk to your doctor about, but to get you started, Iíve included some generally accepted ranges based on your frame, or bone size.
Keep in mind these are for girls who are done growing, which isnít until after your teen years, but it can give you a guide for where youíre going at least as an adult. If you find you fall outside the healthy weight range for your height, talk to your doctor about whatís right for you and the best ways to address your concerns. Do not diet without the permission and insight of a health care specialist as you can affect your growth and health by dieting improperly.

Your Best Skills and Abilities
Girls also have a tendency to pick themselves (and each other) apart instead of building each other up. Ignore the outside world for a moment and just think about what youíre really good at. If youíre not coming up with anything, bring in the assistance of your best friends to help you figure out what strengths and skills you possess. You might be really good with people Ė you can talk to strangers and make others feel good about themselves just by meeting you. You might be an excellent student and can study like a champ and earn those high grades. You might be a dedicated artist, a skilled athlete, a comedian in your own right or a talented actor.
Whatever your best skills, learn them and then always keep them in the forefront of your mind as you go through the next few years picking colleges, choosing degree plans and majors and ultimately picking a career. Itís hard to know what you really want to do right from the start of high school
, but knowing that youíre great in all forms of art and that you love it will certainly help you narrow down some choices as you move toward becoming an adult who has to support herself on her talent and skills.
