Often she took a stroll by the river at a nearby park, looking at her reflection.

I approached her silently. 'Such a curious young woman,' I thought, 'perhaps I can befriend her.'

I walked up to her waving and smiling. She returned a half-smile but she immediately looked back down.

"Are you from around?" I asked.

"No," she replied. "But I've lost something on my first arrival here. And I was hoping I could find it."

"I would be glad to help."

"That's very kind of you. But pray, I fear it is nearly impossible. The current of the river must have taken it away."

"Hope is not lost, especially if it's such a valuable object. One must not stop looking."

She grinned and I looked down at the river with the words, "So what is it that you have lost?" still in my mouth. No sound escaped my lips. The single glance I gifted to the water was enough to silence and to realize something wasn't right.

I was alone in the shadows of the river. My reflection was perfectly portrayed there. But she wasn't there.
